Broken Flowers, Bullshit, and Social Control

Movie Review: Broken Flowers

Filmmakers like Jarmusch have an extremely limited sense of what goes on in the US. They inhabit small, incestuous, quasi-artistic circles, imagining themselves to be the most advanced of men and women. In fact, they settle for vague and pale images, an America that exists largely in their heads. They always miss the important thing, the social mainspring of American life. In Broken Flowers, frankly, the images of the New York and New Jersey towns and suburbs through which Don drives suggest in and of themselves a complexity that the film’s narrative does not. One wants to see more. At present filmmakers lag far, far behind.

Book Review: On Bullshit

On Bullshit was inspired by author Harry G. Frankfurt's concern with what he sees as an abundance of utter bullshit in our society. The book represents his attempt to explain exactly what it is and why it exists. The trouble, he says, is that the phenomenon of rampant bullshit has gone almost completely unstudied because most of us are confident that we recognize it when we hear it and so are smart enough to avoid it, which is a mistake. In my opinion, the popularity of FOX News and the (sigh) re-election of President Bush should be enough to demonstrate that perhaps even a majority of the population falls somewhere between autistic and legally retarded, remaining totally oblivious to the proliferation of bullshit from our political pundits.

National News: Our Good Friends in the CIA - Not!

This is the heavily, slickly-promoted notion that within the CIA (and FBI) are loyal, patriotic Americans (Edmonds, Scheuer, McGovern, et al) outraged by the Neocon coup. They are fighting the Neocons. They are on our side. Rubbish. This whole thing is a CIA deception.

World News: Iraqi Women Worried They Will See No Liberation

Unlike the women in Afghanistan, women in Iraq were not under radical Islamic oppression in Iraq. Now, there is a very real fear they will be.

World News: 20 Massacred in Port-au-Prince Soccer Stadium

During a soccer game on Saturday funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development and the US-backed interim Haitian government, hooded police and men with machetes attacked people they called "bandits." This according to Reuters.

World News: Unanswered questions about Sri Lankan foreign minister’s assassination

Based on what has been made public, there are many unanswered questions about the Kadirgamar assassination. Moreover, much of what has been leaked to the media is either dubious or has been later shown to be misleading or false.

How is it that a small group of people are allowed to decide the fate of a society and make decisions that benefit those few elite? The first part of this two hour program begins with George Draffan, co-author of Welcome to the Machine, who explains the way technology is used to manage the public. The program ends with a talk by John Taylor Gatto, a former teacher who goes into the history of education and how it plays into social control.

Hustle & Flow, Bitter Medicine, and Chavez

Movie Review: Hustle & Flow

How to treat contemporary American life in an artistic and truthful fashion? This remains a major stumbling block even for the sincere and the semi-sincere. Elements in Hustle & Flow are lifelike and convincing; other, more important ones, are not. Unhappily, the rest of Hustle & Flow does not, for the most part, live up to the promise of its opening sequence. The spontaneity, the elementary and understandable human confusion, even the reflectiveness largely evaporate as the film settles too often and all too easily for the cliché of the American success story, clumsily glossing over its own contradictions in the process.

DVD Review: The Harder They Come

Compared to Hustle & Flow, this is a more honest portrait of capitalism, the music industry, and the myth of the American dream. Few cult films have enjoyed the continued impact of Perry Henzell's The Harder They Come. Since it's release in 1973, it's gained an underground following that is nothing less than legendary.

National News: Popularizing Tracking Devices

To date, Wal-Mart, Target and the U.S. Department of Defense have been among the biggest influence peddlers in promoting the use of RFID, imposing mandates on suppliers to apply tags on pallets, cases and even individual items of merchandise.

National News: Will Celebrex be as bad as VIOXX?

Questions are being raised about Pfizer's (PFE) pending legal troubles in association with Celebrex.

World News: Top-selling drug linked to increased suicide risk

One of Britain’s most widely prescribed antidepressants has been linked to a seven-fold increase in suicide attempts.

World News: Christian Coalition leader Pat Robertson calls for assassination of Venezuelan president

The call for Chavez’s assassination is a serious threat coming from a leading Republican and close ally of the Bush administration. It is in line with the previous attempts of the Bush administrations to destabilize and unseat the Venezuelan government. As is evident in Robertson’s comments, the main issue for the US ruling elite is not tyranny or terrorism, but Venezuela’s oil and the preservation by any and all means of the US sphere of influence in Latin America.

Pig News: SWAT team police use force at Utah rave party

About 90 law enforcement officers from multiple agencies broke up what they said was a rave party on public and private property in the Diamond Fork area of Spanish Fork canyon, an hour outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Pig News: Officer Arrested for Molesting Children

One of Bakersfield’s finest found himself on the other side of the law Monday facing several charges, including molesting a child. Monday, 32-year-old Officer Ryan Floyd was arrested on three counts of lewd acts with a child under 14, two counts of felony child abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, and spousal abuse.

Lies, Mongolian Eyes, and more Slave Revolt

De Menezes left his flat and boarded a bus on his way to work, from which point he was placed under surveillance and followed. The only reason given for this by the police is that he had “Mongolian eyes” and looked like a suspect.

The "Shoot-to-Kill" policy of Britain has been ushered in on the muscular shoulders of good ol' fashion Racism.

Leaked documents from an independent investigation proves two facts that most Black Americans already know and could have told the British. The first fact is that the cops shot De Menezes for no other reason other than he fit a profile. The second fact is that the media quickly took the side of the authorities who made wild claims to why this man was murdered.

The WORLD SOCIALIST WEBSITE has a terrific article on the subject which begins:

Documents and photographs leaked to ITV News demonstrate that the entire story used by the police, the media and the government to excuse the killing of the young Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes in London was a lie -- On every important detail, what the public were told was a fabrication. Rather than the accidental victim of an anti-terror operation, de Menezes was deliberately targeted for state execution. The aim of this operation was to send a message to the British public that democratic rights count for nothing—a message that was made explicit by Prime Minister Tony Blair when he declared that the “rules of the game” have now changed.

Technical Difficulties

Since starting the Slave Revolt website almost a year ago, Verizon online has been a pain in my ass. The site is unstable because of constant tinkering by the Verizon eggheads, and they refuse to help with correcting problems they have caused.

I used Verizon's free webspace for as long as I could, but Slave Revolt Radio needs a domain of its own. Until I get the other website up and running, I'll be more dedicated to this blog. New shows, interviews, and articles will be posted. The audio archive and videos will be maintained at the old website for now. New stuff will be here.

Thanks for the support. There are some hardcore listeners to the show who keep me motivated. Keep emailing. Post comments. Stay tuned.
