The UN is to investigate itself again after it was revealed by the London Telegraph today that more than twenty different cases of child sex slavery involving UN staff have been reported in southern Sudan.

Last November a BBC Investigation found that children as young as 11 have been subjected to rape and prostitution by United Nations peacekeepers in Haiti and Liberia. A previous BBC investigation in Liberia discovered systematic abuse, involving food being given out to teenage refugees in return for sex. In both instances the UN promised to investigate.

Previous to this, in early 2002 a massive pedophilia scandal within the UN was uncovered involving sexual abuse against West African refugee children in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea. UPI reported that Senior U.N. officials knew of the widespread pedophilia and not only did they not take action against the perpetrators, they covered up the atrocities.

WASHINGTON -- Some of President Reagan's top advisers have operated a virtual parallel government outside the traditional Cabinet departments and agencies almost from the day Reagan took office, congressional investigators and administration officials have concluded.

Investigators believe that the advisers' activities extended well beyond the secret arms sales to Iran and aid to the contras now under investigation.

Lt. Col. Oliver North, for example, helped draw up a controversial plan to suspend the Constitution in the event of a national crisis, such as nuclear war, violent and widespread internal dissent or national opposition to a U.S. military invasion abroad.

When the attorney general at the time, William French Smith, learned of the proposal, he protested in writing to North's boss, then-national security adviser Robert McFarlane.

The advisers conducted their activities through secret contacts throughout the government with persons who acted at their direction but did not officially report to them.

The activities of those contacts were coordinated by the National Security Council, the officials and investigators said.

There appears to have been no formal directive for the advisers' activities, which knowledgeable sources described as a parallel government.

In a secret assessment of the activities, the lead counsel for the Senate Iran-contra committee called it a "secret government-within-a-government."

The arrangement permitted Reagan administration officials to claim that they were not involved in controversial or illegal activities, the officials said.

"It was the ultimate plausible deniability," said a well-briefed official who has served the Reagan administration since 1982 and who often collaborated on covert assistance to the Nicaraguan contras.

The roles of top-level officials and of Reagan himself are still not clear. But that is expected to be a primary topic when North appears before the Iran-contra committees beginning Tuesday. Special prosecutor Lawrence Walsh also is believed to be trying to prove in his investigation of the Iran-contra affair that government officials engaged in a criminal conspiracy.

ADVISERS FORMED SHADOW GOVERNMENT, PROBERS SAY

Much of the time, Cabinet secretaries and their aides were unaware of the advisers' activities. When they periodically detected operations, they complained or tried to derail them, interviews show.

But no one ever questioned the activities in a broad way, possibly out of a belief that the advisers were operating with presidential sanction, officials said.

Reagan did know of or approve at least some of the actions of the secret group, according to previous accounts by aides, friends and high-ranking foreign officials.

One such case is the 1985 visit to Libya by William Wilson, then-U.S. ambassador to the Vatican and a close Reagan friend, to meet with Libyan leader Col. Moammar Gadhafi, officials said last week. Secretary of State George Shultz rebuked Wilson, but the officials said Reagan knew of the trip in advance.

The heart of the secret structure from 1983 to 1986 was North's office in the Old Executive Office Building adjacent to the White House, investigators believe.

North's influence within the secret structure was so great, the sources said, that he was able to have the orbits of sophisticated surveillance satellites altered to follow Soviet ships around the world, call for the launching of high-flying spy aircraft on secret missions over Cuba and Nicaragua and become involved in sensitive domestic activities.

Many initiatives

Others in the structure included some of Reagan's closest friends and advisers, including former national security adviser William Clark, the late CIA Director William Casey and Attorney General Edwin Meese, officials and investigators said.

Congressional investigators said the Iran deal was just one of the group's initiatives. They say exposure of the unusual arrangement may be the legacy of their inquiry.

"After we establish that a policy decision was made at the highest levels to transfer responsibility for contra support to the NSC..., we favor examining how that decision was implemented," wrote Arthur Liman, chief counsel of the Senate committee, in a secret memorandum to panel leaders Sens. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, and Warren Rudman, R- N.H., before hearings began May 5.

"This is the part of the story that reveals the whole secret government-within-a-government, operated from the [Executive Office Building] by a Lt. Col., with its own army, air force, diplomatic agents, intelligence operatives and appropriations capacity," Limon wrote in the memo, parts of which were shared with The Herald.

A spokesman for Liman declined comment but did not dispute the memo's existence.

A White House official rejected the notion that any of Reagan's advisers were operating secretly.

"The president has constantly expressed his foreign policy positions to the public and has consulted with the Congress," the official said.

Began in 1980

Congressional investigators and current and former officials interviewed -- members of the CIA, State Department and Pentagon -- said they still do not have a full record of the impact of the the advisers' activities.

But based on investigations and personal experience, they believe the secret governing arrangement traces its roots to the last weeks of Reagan's 1980 campaign.

Officials say the genesis may have been an October 1980 decision by Casey, Reagan's campaign manager and a former officer in the World War II precursor of the CIA, to create an October Surprise Group to monitor Jimmy Carter's feverish negotiations with Iran for the release of 52 American hostages.

The group, led by campaign foreign policy adviser Richard Allen, was founded out of concern Carter might pull off an "October surprise" such as a last-minute deal for the release of the hostages before the Nov. 4 election. One of the group's first acts was a meeting with a man claiming to represent Iran who offered to release the hostages to Reagan.

Allen -- Reagan's first national security adviser-- and another campaign aide, Laurence Silberman, told The Herald in April of the meeting. they said McFarlane, then a Senate Armed Services Committee aide, arranged and attended it. McFarlane later became Reagan's national security adviser and played a key role in the Iran-contra affair. Allen and Silberman said they rejected the offer to release the hostages to Reagan.

Briefing book theft

Congressional aides now link another well-known campaign incident -- the theft of confidential briefing materials from Carter's campaign before the Oct. 28, 1980, Carter-Reagan debate -- to the same group of advisers.

They believe that Casey obtained the briefing materials and passed them to James Baker, another top Reagan campaign aide, who was White House chief of staff in Reagan's first term.

Once Reagan was sworn in, the group moved quickly to set itself up, officials said. Within months, the advisers were clashing with officials in the traditional agencies.

Six weeks after Reagan was sworn in, apparently over State Department objections, then-CIA director Casey submitted a proposal to Reagan calling for covert support of anti-Sandinista groups that had fled Nicaragua after the 1979 revolution.

[THE IRAN-CONTRA CONNECTION: NORTH HAD BIG ROLE IN INNER CIRCLE, INVESTIGATORS SAY]

It is still unclear whether Casey cleared the plan with Reagan. But In November 1981 the CIA secretly flew an Argentine military leader, Gen. Leopoldo Galtieri, to Washington to devise a secret agreement under which Argentine military officers trained Nicaraguan rebels, according to an administration official familiar with the agreement.

About the same time, North completed his transfer to the NSC from the Marine Corps. Those who worked with North in 1981 remember his first assignments as routine, although not unimportant.

North, they recalled, was briefly assigned to carry the "football," the briefcase containing the secret contingency plans for fighting a nuclear war, which is taken everywhere the president goes. North later widened his assignment to cover national crisis contingency planning. In that capacity he became involved with the controversial national crisis plan drafted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

NATIONAL CRISIS PLAN

From 1982 to 1984, North assisted FEMA, the U.S. government's chief national crisis-management unit, in revising contingency plans for dealing with nuclear war, insurrection or massive military mobilization.

North's involvement with FEMA set off the first major clash between the official government and the advisers and led to the formal letter of protest in 1984 from then- Attorney General Smith.

Smith was in Europe last week and could not be reached for comment.

But a government official familiar with North's collaboration with FEMA said then-Director Louis O. Guiffrida, a close friend of Meese's, mentioned North in meetings during that time as FEMA's NSC contact.

Guiffrida could not be reached for comment, but FEMA spokesman Bill McAda confirmed the relationship.

"Officials of FEMA met with Col. North during 1982 to 1984," McAda said. "These meetings were appropriate to Col. North's duties with the National Security Council and FEMA's responsibilities in certain areas of national security."

FEMA's clash with Smith occurred over a secret contingency plan that called for suspension of the Constitution, turning control of the United States over to FEMA, appointment of military commanders to run state and local governments and declaration of martial law during a national crisis.

The plan did not define national crisis, but it was understood to be nuclear war, violent and widespread internal dissent or national opposition against a military invasion abroad.

PLAN WAS PROTESTED

The official said the contingency plan was written as part of an executive order or legislative package that Reagan would sign and hold within the NSC until a severe crisis arose.

The martial law portions of the plan were outlined in a June 30, 1982, memo by Guiffrida's deputy for national preparedness programs, John Brinkerhoff. A copy of the memo was obtained by The Herald.

The scenario outlined in the Brinkerhoff memo resembled somewhat a paper Guiffrida had written in 1970 at the Army War College in Carlisle, Pa., in which he advocated martial law in case of a national uprising by black militants. The paper also advocated the roundup and transfer to "assembly centers or relocation camps" of at least 21 million "American Negroes."

When he saw the FEMA plans, Attorney General Smith became alarmed. He dispatched a letter to McFarlane Aug. 2, 1984 lodging his objections and urging a delay in signing the directive.

"I believe that the role assigned to the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the revised Executive Order exceeds its proper function as a coordinating agency for emergency preparedness," Smith said in the letter to McFarlane, which The Herald obtained. "This department and others have repeatedly raised serious policy and legal objections to the creation of an 'emergency czar' role for FEMA."

It is unclear whether the executive order was signed or whether it contained the martial law plans. Congressional sources familiar with national disaster procedures said they believe Reagan did sign an executive order in 1984 that revised national military mobilization measures to deal with civilians in case of nuclear war or other crisis.

ORCHESTRATED NEWS LEAKS

Around the time that issue was producing fireworks with the administration, McFarlane and Casey reassigned North from national crisis planning to international covert management of the contras. The transfer came after North took a personal interest, realizing that neither the State Department nor any other government agency wanted to handle the issue after it became clear early in 1984 that Congress was moving to bar official aid to the rebels.

The new assignment, plus North's natural organizational ability, creativity and the sheer energy he dedicated to the issue, gradually led to an expansion of his power and stature within the covert structure, officials and investigators believe.

Meese also was said to have played a role in the secret government, investigators now believe, but his role is less clear.

Meese sometimes referred private American citizens to the NSC so they could be screened and contacted for soliciting support for the Nicaraguan contras.

One of those supporters, Philip Mabry of Fort Worth, told The Herald earlier this year that in 1983 he was told by fellow conservatives in Texas to contact Meese, then White House counselor, if he wanted to help the contras. After he contacted Meese's office, Mabry received a letter from Meese obtained by The Herald advising him that his name had been given to the "appropriate people."

Shortly thereafter, Mabry said, a woman who identified herself as Meese's secretary gave him the name and phone number of another NSC secretary who, in turn, gave him North and his secretary, Fawn Hall, as contacts.

Meese's Justice Department spokesman, Patrick Korten, denies that Meese was part of North's secret contra supply network and notes that Meese does not recall having referred anyone to North on contra-related matters.

In addition to North's role as contra commander and fund-raiser, North became secret overseer of the State Department's Office of Public Diplomacy, through which the Reagan administration disseminated information that cast Nicaragua as a threat to its neighbors and the United States.

An intelligence source familiar with North's relationship with that office said North was directly involved in many of the best publicized news leaks, including the Nov. 4, 1984, Election Day announcement that Soviet-made MiG jet fighters were on their way to Nicaragua.

McFarlane is now believed to have been the senior administration official who told reporters that the Soviet cargo ship Bakuriani, en route to Nicaragua from a Soviet Black Sea port, was probably carrying MiGs.

The intelligence official said North apparently recommended that the information be leaked to the press on Election Day so it would reach millions of people watching election results. CBS and NBC broadcast the report that night.

CLARK HAD KEY ROLE

The leak led to a new clash between the regular bureaucracy and the president's advisers. The official State Department spokesman, John Hughes, tried hard to play down the report, pointing out that it was unproven that the Bakuriani was carrying MiGs. At the same time, employees of the Office of Public Diplomacy, acting under North's direction, insisted that the crates were inside the ship and that MiGs were still a possibility.

To take a closer look, the source said, North requested a high-flying SR-71 Blackbird spy aircraft be sent from Beale Air Force Base near Sacramento, Calif., to fly over the Nicaraguan port of Corinto while the Bakuriani unloaded its cargo. The pictures showed that the Bakuriani unloaded helicopters, not MiGs.

North was not the only adviser who operated outside traditional government channels, investigators have concluded.

Others were known as the RIGLET, a semi-official unit made up of North; Alan Fiers, a CIA Central American affairs officer; and Elliott Abrams, the current assistant secretary of state for inter-American affairs, according to Abrams' subordinate Richard Melton. Melton revealed the existence of the RIGLET in a deposition given to the Iran- contra committees. The name is a diminutive for RIG, which stands for Restricted Interagency Group.

Among the RIGLET's actions was ordering the U.S. ambassador to Costa Rica, Lewis Tambs, to assist the contras in setting up a front in southern Nicaragua. Tambs, who resigned suddenly last year after his links to North were revealed, testified about the instructions to Iran-contra investigators.

But perhaps the key to the parallel government was the role played by Reagan's second national security adviser, William Clark. It was during Clark's tenure that North began to gain influence in the NSC.

Clark also recruited several midlevel officers from the Pentagon and the CIA to work on a special Central American task force in 1983 to push aid for El Salvador, a task force member said.

"Judge Clark was the granddaddy of the system," he said. "I was working at the Pentagon on another issue when my boss said that because of special circumstances, I was to be reassigned to the task force."

A former administration official familiar with Clark's activities said Clark also had approved contacts between Vatican Ambassador Wilson and Libya before Wilson's November 1985 journey, which came after McFarlane replaced Clark at the NSC.

The former official said Wilson also had carried out secret missions for the Reagan administration in a Latin American country where Wilson reportedly maintained contacts with high-level officials. The source asked that the country not be identified because the system is still in place and had reduced tensions by circumventing the regular bureaucracies of both countries.

Calls to Wilson's and Clark's offices in California were not returned.

That’s exactly what an editor for the business section at the Boston Globe said during class at Harvard when I proposed writing a story about the correlation between the rise in crime and poverty in our city. I was dumbfounded and almost answered, “All you have to do is look outside your window,” as I remembered the men standing day after day on the street corners looking for work at my Somerville neighborhood. Then again, I didn’t know where the editor lived and the suburbs isn’t exactly a Boston hub for the homeless. The story idea was shut down, and we both moved on with our privileged lives.

Meanwhile, crime in Boston is still on the rise as Mayor Thomas M. Menino gave the order this past spring to hire 70 new police personnel. The increased police presence forced Rev. Bruce Wall to tell a Boston Globe reporter that, “Every Friday night when I walk the neighborhoods I see the police pulling over a number of young people, stopping, frisking, inquiring, checking on weapons” and went on to complain that the police force looked more like an Aryan Nation, turning good kids into bad kids. The good kids and their mothers sure complained last week when Officer Jarrod Gero interrupted a 4-year-old child’s birthday party in a courtyard on Sonoma Street, in Roxbury, pepperspraying several guests in the process, according to the Boston Phoenix. Only one arrest was made: 24-year-old Jerome Goffigan, who according to several witnesses was playing musical chairs with the children, charged with six crimes, ranging from marijuana possession to assaulting an officer. Party goers complained bitterly to the Phoneix about the unnecessary force of the "ensuing 18 officers who swarmed the courtyard — still filled with children — their guns drawn and shouting orders." The Boston Police Department’s “surgical approach” to crime by “taking out the bad characters” has focused largely in Dorchester, Mattapan, and Roxbury, where 85 percent of the crime is concentrated. So how does this relate to poverty? Curiously, all three are distressed neighborhoods where the average median household income ($35, 537) is almost half that of Cambridge’s ($61, 646). In 2003, the Civil Rights Project at Harvard University reported that blacks and Latinos are five to six times more likely than whites to live in Metro Boston poverty neighborhoods (with poverty rates of 20% or higher), and Asians are three times more likely. “The costs of living in neighborhoods of concentrated poverty include higher rates of dropping out from high school, teen childbearing, and adolescent delinquency, among other costs,” said the report. The Center for Economic Research in Washington, D.C., released in 2003 a report that showed how when job quality improves, incomes rise, particularly for the lowest earners; and poverty, welfare rolls, and crime all fall. And as early as 1999, a review of findings at the Federal Reserve Board conference in New York found that “increased levels of crime, poor health, mortality, poor schools, and poor housing are associated with higher levels of inequality across cities, states, and nations.” But the original question wasn’t about the correlation between poverty and crime, it was about how poverty is not apparent to a Boston Globe editor. In Massachusetts, the gap between upper- and lower-income families has grown more in Massachusetts than in 47 of the 50 states over the past two decades, according to the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center. The average income of the 20 poorest families has grown 16 percent from $16,938 to $19,690 per year, compared to a soaring 105 percent growth for 5 percent of the wealthiest families at $233,108 per year. The Boston Indicators Project reports that income inequality in Massachusetts began 40 years ago, and that in 2004, more than 40% of Boston families had incomes below Self-Sufficiency Standards. In Roxbury alone, 50.8% of the population live under the poverty line, according to the EPA’s Urban Environmental Program in Massachusetts. Ironically, that same year Massachusetts was the only state in the country to shrink in population size, as those who could afford it ventured better opportunities and cheaper housing elsewhere. In New Orleans it took a catastrophe for people to face impoverished America. One would hope that we can get past our pre-conception of living in the “richest nation in the world” and see how economic inequality in this country affects our neighborhoods. As Boston continues to face high energy, housing, health care, and higher education costs — and a poverty-blind editorial board at the Boston Globe — one needs to ask who will be left behind to deal with our strained communities. A stronger police force certainly can’t be the best answer

Five years after the fact, the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, DC, remain largely uninvestigated. The most critical questions surrounding events that supposedly “changed everything” continue to go unanswered and even unaddressed.

Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center, following in the wake of United 93 (directed by Paul Greenglass), does not deign to approach any of the troubling issues surrounding September 11. On the contrary, Stone’s work is artistically crude and politically dishonest.

The film follows two Port Authority policemen, John McLoughlin (played by Nicolas Cage) and Will Jimeno (Michael Peña), who are ordered on the morning of September 11 to help with the evacuation of the first World Trade Center tower to be struck and end up buried in rubble themselves. For the greater portion of the film we see McLoughlin and Jimeno, in pain and speaking to one another, stuck in the tons of wreckage of the massive skyscrapers.

At one point in Stone’s film, President George W. Bush shows up on a television screen. “The resolve of our great nation is being tested, but make no mistake,” he asserts, “we will show the world we will pass the test.” New York City’s Mayor Rudolph Giuliani makes a brief appearance. Horrified television viewers around the world watch the event.

Much of the film cuts between the two trapped men and their distraught wives and families in suburban New York and New Jersey. Donna McLoughlin (Maria Bello), the wife of the 21-year veteran of the police force, has four children, one of whom accuses her of indifference because the family sits at home and waits for news. Eventually, Donna heads into Manhattan to find out her husband’s fate.

Jimeno’s wife, the younger Allison (Maggie Gyllenhaal), is five months pregnant. With her family and in-laws, she waits anxiously across the river in New Jersey. Given false information that her husband has been rescued, Allison and other family members rush to lower Manhattan, only to be told that Jimeno remains trapped in the ruins.

An ex-marine from Connecticut, Dave Karnes (Michael Shannon), changes into his old uniform and unofficially reports for duty at Ground Zero. Patrolling the site at night, he makes contact with Jimeno and McLoughlin, who are eventually brought to the surface by emergency workers risking their own lives in the process.

The real McLoughlin and Jimeno survived the ordeal, and the screenplay, by Andrea Berloff, is based on their accounts of the experience.

Stone has never been a serious artist. His “good” films (Salvador, Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, JFK) were not very good, unsubtle and bombastic, and his bad films (The Doors, Natural Born Killers, Any Given Sunday, Alexander) have simply been awful.

About Any Given Sunday, six years ago, I wrote: “In any event, the final result is at once clichéd, impersonal and hysterical. Nearly everyone acts detestably throughout.” About Alexander, in 2005: “Alexander tells us little about its central figure or the sort of society he emerged from or envisioned. Its goings-on are rather silly. It’s not at all clear what Stone is getting at, other than suggesting that conquering the world is exhausting and psychologically damaging work. He wants us to admire youth and heroism, but a sensibility that finds it difficult to distinguish between the exploits of Jim Morrison of The Doors and Alexander of Macedon may be lacking some fundamental ingredient.”

Berloff’s screenplay for World Trade Center, although based on facts, is cliché-ridden and contrived, and the direction follows suit. Even the opening banter among the Port Authority cops feels false. Certain moments are objectively moving, and the performers do their best, but the film is emotionally manipulative and maudlin. “Is Daddy coming home?” asks Allison’s daughter at one point. “They did what they had to do,” we are sternly told at another. Although no expense or theatrics have been spared, the condition of McLoughlin and Jimeno is never genuinely communicated—because the film, at its core, is deeply evasive and untruthful and this finds expression at every dramatic turning point.

Stone and his colleagues assert that World Trade Center is “not a political film.” In a variety of interviews, the director has sounded this theme. “The beauty of my original premise was to take you inside the lives of these two men,” Stone told the Chicago Sun-Times. “I wanted to narrow it down to two men and feel their fear, their strength and their courage. I thought this was a fresh way to purge our systems of this tragedy.”

In comments to the New York Times, the filmmaker went farther: “It’s not about the World Trade Center, really. It’s about any man or woman faced with the end of their lives, and how they survive.”

The notion that this is merely a tribute to the courage and strength of individuals on a tragic day is absurd, and it’s doubtful that Stone believes it. If the work is simply about individual heroics, or how men and women face the end of their lives, why spend $63 million in recreating the rubble of the World Trade Center?

The filmmaker’s own view, which comes out from time to time, seems to be that September 11 was an extraordinary opportunity for national unity, which was hijacked by a crowd of neo-conservatives in the Bush administration: “All I can say is that we had the sympathy of the world on that day. The rest of the world was with us. We had a right to pursue those murderers. We should have closed the circle. We didn’t need more and more terror, Constitutional breakdowns and more pain.” Iraq, he argues, like numerous leading Democrats, is the “wrong war.”

In the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks, Stone had a more “left” take on the events. On October 6, 2001, at a New York Film Festival forum, he denounced the “new world order” and asserted that “the revolt of September 11th was about ‘Fuck you! Fuck your order—’” He suggested that those in the Arab world who celebrated the downing of the World Trade Center were reacting like those who had responded joyfully to the French and Russian revolutions. Stone also apparently drew a link between the attacks and the hijacking of the 2000 elections by the Bush camp, which he described as a confirmation of the demise of democracy.

To ascribe any degree of political legitimacy to the heinous attacks of September 11, in which 2,700 innocent human beings horribly lost their lives, was wrong and disoriented. Stone’s transformation into a manufacturer of patriotic myths is not an improvement. He asserts, “Don’t pigeon-hole me; I change.” We feel that a lack of principles and any sense of political responsibility, however, are constants.

In any event, Stone, with whatever degree of consciousness, has made a highly political film. Granted, this takes a peculiar form. In World Trade Center, no effort has been made to provide the slightest historical or political context for the 9/11 attacks; on the contrary, Stone’s film is devoted to the principle of explaining nothing. The viewer, it is made clear, will know only what McLoughlin and Jimeno knew that day. Why is that an advantage? What is the point of art in that case? This was the premise of United 93, and it failed in that instance, too.

If sticking to the bare empirical facts, or claiming to do so, is a poor guideline for a historian or a journalist, it is nearly always fatal for an artist. Art exists to illuminate, to expand, to magnify. It lives or dies by the degree to which its imaginative and recreative powers are exercised, even in non-fiction or documentary—in those cases, the conscious intervention of the artist to arrange his or her material is perhaps all the more essential.

It is impossible to understand the smallest incidents of September 11 apart from their broader context. The film, of course, does not take this up, but the very unpreparedness of the city for such an attack led to the high death toll among firefighters in particular. The latter were unable to communicate with each other or the police. Firefighters in the World Trade Center’s north tower, for example, 121 of whom died, were never able to hear the order to evacuate because of faulty equipment—at a time when all the civilians who could possible have been reached were already out of the building.

Meanwhile, Rudolph Giuliani treated September 11 as one extended photo opportunity. As the WSWS has noted, the mayor “did little other than appear repeatedly before the television cameras.” At the national commission hearings in May 2004, Giuliani was heckled by a number of relatives of those killed in the attack. (In a new book, as noted by the New York Times August 6, commission heads Thomas Kean and Lee Hamilton admit that they failed to “ask tough questions” of Giuliani out of fear of “public anger”—i.e., the right-wing media.)

The general social and socio-psychological situation is a fundamental fact for cinema; it has to saturate a given work. Stone’s film, however, portrays an American society without sharp contradictions. The better Hollywood films about World War II never painted such a false picture. Even the titles of some of the works, They Were Expendable, the ironic The Best Years of Our Lives, acknowledged difficulties and social discontent. In World Trade Center the myth of a nationally unified, harmonious America filters into the images and falsifies critical moments, including intimate ones.

Explicitly political elements are not missing either in this “non-political” film. A Sheboygan, Wisconsin, policeman, focused upon for some reason, calls the terrorists “bastards.” The images of the ex-marine, Karnes, in his uniform, determinedly searching the smoking ruins are particularly loaded. Having come upon the trapped men, in the company of another marine, he shouts down to them, “We are marines. We’re not leaving you. You are our mission.” Later in the film, Karnes looks straight ahead and menacingly avers, “They’re gonna need some good men out there to avenge this.”

Stone’s work is thoroughly conformist and encourages various forms of backwardness. One shot stands out in particular: one of Allison’s in-laws on her knees, tearfully praying. The camera lingers on the woman, in Stone’s inimitable style, which consists of hitting the spectator over the head until he or she cries “Uncle!” We are also treated twice to a vision of Jesus Christ, which apparently came to Jimeno in his obviously desperate circumstances.

Patriotism, militarism, religion, Bush and Giuliani: this is nothing for Stone to be proud of. The extreme right, however, thinks highly of World Trade Center. Reactionary columnist Cal Thomas termed the work “one of the greatest pro-American, pro-family, pro-faith, pro-male, flag-waving, God Bless America films you will ever see.” L. Brent Bozell III, president of the right-wing Media Research Center and founder of the Parents Television Council, described World Trade Center as “a masterpiece.” These comments strike one as a clutching at straws. It’s dubious, in fact, whether such an insincere film will have a significant impact on those who see it.

Parenthetically, the effort by Paramount on behalf of World Trade Center is a further repugnant instance of the Hollywood studios’ knuckling under to the ultra-right. The Los Angeles Times reports that Paramount “was so worried about Stone’s bomb-thrower reputation that the studio hired a media firm [Creative Response Concepts] that played a prominent role in various conservative causes, notably the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth group that attacked Sen. John F. Kerry’s Vietnam record during the 2004 presidential campaign, to do outreach in the conservative community. Paramount also tried to avert a backlash in Washington by having screenings of the film and its trailer for members of Congress.”

Why has Stone made this film? As he says, he “changes,” and it may very well be that his own confused, disoriented views are drifting generally to the right. The atmosphere of intimidation that followed the September 11 attacks and which has never dissipated has clearly had an impact on an entire social layer, in Hollywood in particular. How many leading film figures have denounced the Bush administration for its criminal activities?

There is another issue, however, perhaps an even more troubling one, and not only associated with Stone’s evolution (although he may be particularly susceptible): the obsession with celebrity in the US, the desire to be in the limelight, the fear of isolation and disapproval. As we noted seven years ago, at the time of informer Elia Kazan’s honoring by the Academy Awards—“In America, after all, if you are not an immense success, a star, you are nothing, a human zero.”

Stone has been wandering in the wilderness for a dozen years or more. Recent films, Alexander in particular, have not been successful in the US. Directing World Trade Center did not fall into his lap. As he admits, he campaigned for the job. Clearly, he felt, here was a chance to get back in the industry’s good graces, to return to the fold. And, by all appearances, the strategy has worked.

The filmmaker made a revealing comment in an interview with the New York Times, whose reporter noted that Paul Haggis (Crash) is directing an adaptation of former intelligence analyst Richard Clarke’s book, Against All Enemies, which took the Bush administration to task for its failings. “Asked if that weren’t the kind of film he might once have tried to tackle, Stone first scoffs: ‘I couldn’t do it. I’d be burned alive.’ Then he adds: ‘This [World Trade Center] is not a political film. That’s the mantra they handed me.’ ”

How can anything worthwhile emerge from this type of cowardice and cynicism?

Councilman Compares Cleveland Teens To Terrorists

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland City Councilman Zach Reed wants to help curb crime and drugs, especially among teens in his community.

"These are modern-day terrorists," Reed said.

He said there is little that separates the drug dealers and street criminals that keep citizens in his southeast Cleveland ward from leaving their homes and the terrorists who would look to attack our country.

Reed is urging council to fight violence the same way they would fight terrorism.

"Therefore, the time has come to make Ward 3 a police state and submit a true zero-tolerance policy," Reed said.

He said he's received permission to use a $50,000 federal grant to hire off-duty police officers with arrest powers to patrol the streets of Mt. Pleasant.

"We will be implementing the same policing strategy as my Shaker Heights neighbors, which do not allow loitering on their street corners," he said.

Reed also has another grant to install more security cameras in his ward.

Crime was reduced more than 70 percent in the area where the first cameras were installed.

City leaders said Cleveland is no different than most cities when it comes to youth violence, and while they support the councilman's intention, they take issue with his wording.

"To take it to the step of declaring martial law, that's not in the interest of our community," said Public Safety Director Martin Flask.

The extra patrols could hit the streets as early as next week.

One of the most troubling ways this is done is by the use of special terms coined in honor of Black men’s crimes or criminal involvement. The most famous example of this is the term “wilding.” The term wilding was used to describe the attack of a White woman in Central Park in the late 1980s… Another example of this is the whole “Stop Snitching” phenomenon, which has been labeled as a huge threat to the criminal justice system…
The trend of giving special labels to Black men’s bad behavior (or in some cases alleged bad behavior) makes it seem as if Black men invented gang rape or the code of silence that prevents snitchin. If the young wealthy White men can hide beyond their attorneys and say they are not “snitchin” on advice of counsel, the outcome is the similar—the crime is harder to solve. If a group of these White guys decide to have a party where they invite strippers and engage in wilding, the outcome is similar–another woman is sexually assaulted. Unfortunately, most people(especially White folks) in American culture don’t see these behaviors as similar. They think that one Black person’s bad behavior is somehow representative of all Black people, not the individual Black person or people involved. They think subconsciously or consciously that Black men are dangerous and White men are the innocent boys next door. So next time you hear a special lable for Black men’s bad behavior. Please think twice.

Nine-year-old Eman Waleed and her younger brother Abdul Rahman survived the attack on their house, as all of the adults in the room shielded the children with their bodies. Hours after the massacre, Iraqi soldiers found the children under the pile of corpses—wounded but alive.

White ex-cons as likely to find work than black men with no criminal record

April 27, 2006 -- A study from a team of Princeton University sociology professors revealed that race and criminal history continue to play a role in gaining employment.

As part of the study, which began in February 2004, 13 applicants went on nearly 3,500 job interviews with 1,470 private companies. All jobs were entry level.

The men were given the same qualifications and experience, while criminal history was randomly assigned. The most striking results of the study were that white males with criminal records were just as likely as blacks with no criminal history to find employment. Also, having a criminal record reduced the number of positive responses from employers by 57% for black applicants but only by 35% for their white counterparts. Latinos also fared better than blacks.

"A felony conviction confers roughly the same penalty to job applicants as does minority status," wrote Professors Devah Pager and Bruce Western in Discrimination in Low-Wage Labor Markets. "These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that employer discrimination along the lines of race, ethnicity, and criminal conviction status remains a salient source of inequality in contemporary urban labor markets."

Gerald D. Jaynes, a member of the BLACK ENTERPRISE Board of Economists, says he is not surprised by the results. "What's going on here is the employer thinks, 'I have a young white man who made a mistake. I can give him a second chance. On the other hand I have a young black man who grew up in the ghetto committing crime and I don't want to take a chance,'" says Jaynes.

Western says he hopes the study highlights these issues to the entire nation. "I hope our research can alert people to the problems of discrimination," he says.

United 93: Everything but how and why it happened

United 93, written and directed by Paul Greengrass

The extremely limited merit of United 93, the account of the hijacked airliner that crashed in a Pennsylvania field on September 11, 2001, lies more in what it doesn’t do than in what it does. The film is not a flag-waving epic. It does not exploit the doomed passengers, refashioning ordinary people responding to a dire situation into heroes driven to save the White House or the Capitol building. Nor does it simply dehumanize the terrorist hijackers, guilty as they were of an atrocious, anti-human crime.

Drawing from interviews with more than 100 family members and friends of the passengers and crew of the ill-fated flight, the carefully (but evasively) crafted film at least has made less likely future recreations of a more distorted, super-patriotic nature.

The film’s British director, Paul Greengrass, is best known for his 2002 docudrama, Bloody Sunday, about the 1972 shooting of 13 unarmed civil rights demonstrators by British soldiers in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. He also directed The Murder of Stephen Lawrence, a 1999 television film exposing police racism and brutality. But what happened to his socially critical views when he turned to the 9/11 events?

United 93 begins on the morning of September 11 by introducing us to the hijackers, all young men, preparing for their part in a deadly mission whose objective is the commandeering of one of four commercial planes to be directed at major American targets. They are crusaders in a holy war.

As passengers on Flight 93 assemble at the gate, the four men sit among their soon-to-be victims. What are they thinking? Products of a toxic political and cultural environment, one assumes that they feel no compassion for those among whom they plan to die. How else could they carry out their plan? This is one of the few genuinely thoughtful or dramatic moments in the film. The would-be terrorists blend unobtrusively into the crowd of passengers except for their air of palpable discomfort, as they pray under their breath to fortify their resolve.

The United Airlines flight is delayed on the ground by airport congestion, leaving the hijackers out of sync with their comrades in the other jets. Once in the air, normalcy prevails, the activities of the flight crew, the cross-conversation among passengers, etc. The hijackers wait and, presumably, steel themselves.

Ultimately, scenes of mayhem on board the plane, as the four men—including one trained to fly the jet—seize control, alternate with disorganized activity at the Air Traffic Control Center in Herndon, Virginia, regional air traffic control stations and NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) headquarters in Rome, New York.

The interplay between the Herndon command center and the military reveals, at best, a gross incompetence that leads to a 40-minute gap between the crash of American Airlines Flight 11 into the World Trade Center and the launching of fighters from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. Both command centers hear the first reports of the airplanes crashing into the World Trade Center and follow events via cable television news.

Even as United Airlines Flight 175 and American Airlines Flight 77 turn up off-course and presumably hijacked, military commanders are unable to contact the president or vice president for authorization to use force against civilian aircraft. (Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 famously shows Bush sitting paralyzed in an elementary school classroom in Florida for seven minutes after being informed about the World Trade Center attack.)

As word spreads among the passengers and crew aboard United 93 about the terrible events in New York City and Washington, they guess at their fate. With nothing to lose, they ultimately storm the cockpit and overwhelm the hysterical terrorists as the plane goes down. An epilogue states that it was not until four minutes after the jet crashed in rural Pennsylvania that military commanders were notified that Flight 93 had been hijacked.

While a few critics take United 93 to task for its portrayal of the terrorists—the San Francisco Chronicle claims that the men do not “deserve the dignity of being humanized in art”—commentators and reviewers, both liberal and right-wing, praise the film as a ‘taut’ and ‘tasteful’ work. Right-wing columnist George Will of the Washington Post goes so far as to proclaim viewing United 93 a civic duty. Director Greengrass was interviewed by extreme-right blowhard and radio host Rush Limbaugh. In part, Will and Limbaugh are clutching at straws within a political environment that is turning against them, but nonetheless Greengrass has provided them with a certain opening, to his serious discredit.

United 93, the first major film to deal with any aspect of September 11, circumvents every contentious issue. Its focus is narrow—recounting, documentary-style, the 90-minute ordeal.

Greengrass has created a work that can satisfy a wide spectrum of opinions. Far too wide a spectrum. Its openness to interpretation is not a strength. The film seems tailored to avoid offending official public opinion. In the movie’s production notes, the filmmaker demurs: “There are lots of ways to find meaning in the events of 9/11 ... I believe that sometimes, if you look clearly and unflinchingly at a single event, you can find in its shape something much larger than the event itself—the DNA of our times ... Hence a film about United 93.”

But Greengrass has not taken a ‘clear and unflinching’ look at his subject matter. How is it to be explained that the Limbaughs and Wills (could there be a worse fate for a filmmaker than to be fêted by that foul crowd?) interpret his work as meshing comfortably with the Bush agenda. One’s views of the film depend largely on what one already knows about that terrible day. Reproducing surface reality, even painstakingly, does not yield something “much larger than the event itself,” and with United 93, Greengrass has not excavated more truth than he put into the project.

The manner in which Greengrass treats September 11, omitting any reference to the process by which the tragic event came to pass, does not qualify as a discovery of the ‘DNA of our times.’ How is it that these young men are able to destroy themselves and others so barbarically? This is never probed, nor is the bizarre conduct of the administration and the military.

The film fails to treat the 9/11 events in a serious artistic manner. The filmmaker’s refusal to provide a broader, historical context for the events inevitably results in a superficial treatment of characters. Powerful characterizations emerge from historical circumstance. The director takes shortcuts, looking for types who will stand in for all that is not developed. So, to avoid stereotyping the lead terrorist as simply a monster, Greengrass casts a soulful-looking performer (Lewis Alsamari) in the role, who, one frankly feels, could not have carried out such a brutal act. So much more socio-historical understanding and depth would have had to go into the appropriate treatment of the hijackers.

A ‘clear and unflinching’ look at 9/11 would inevitably allude to Washington’s decades-long sponsorship of Islamic fundamentalism, underscoring the fact that the hijackers of Flight 93 were not even born when the US began courting and encouraging reactionary Islamicism, first to weaken left-wing and secular nationalist forces in the Middle East and later in Afghanistan to undermine the Soviet Union.

Even within the film’s ‘docudrama’ framework, this would have been feasible. Greengrass places titles at the end of the film, commenting on various facets of the 9/11 events. Why could he not have similarly begun his film with titles conveying the fact, for example, that in 1979 the US commenced giving financial and military backing to the Islamic fundamentalists engaged in guerrilla warfare against the Soviet-backed regime in Kabul? Or why not a title indicating that Osama bin Laden was essentially on the CIA payroll in the early 1980s, through Pakistani intelligence? Why not a reference to the 500,000 Iraqis who died as a result of US-led sanctions or Washington’s unstinting support for the suppression of the Palestinians? Why not a title explaining that on August 6, 2001, George W. Bush’s daily intelligence briefing was entitled “Bin Laden determined to strike in US”? What questions such an approach would have raised in the spectator’s mind!

Greengrass has made it a guiding principle to offer no explanation and no background—none whatsoever!—to a world-historical event that provided the justification for two neo-colonial wars and the deaths of tens or hundreds of thousands. Artists of another day would have found such an approach unthinkable. Disasters of far less geopolitical consequence, like the sinking of the Titanic, were treated more seriously decades ago. Insofar as the film implies a cause or source of the violence, it lies in some inexplicable or perhaps eternal religious fanaticism, the bankrupt argument of right-wingers such as Christopher Hitchens.

Considering the isssues covered in United 93, it is worth noting that Greengrass co-wrote the screenplay for Omagh (2004), a film about a family whose only son is killed in a 1998 terrorist bombing in Northern Ireland. That work reveals that the authorities had been alerted and, in fact, allowed the bombing to take place. In a brief comment on the WSWS two years ago, the film’s devastating implications for the September 11 attacks were noted. In other words, Greengrass ought to be familiar with the workings and machinations of Western intelligence services. Confronted with even more explosive historical material in United 93, however, the director-writer has largely evaded his artistic and intellectual responsibilities.

Nearly five years have elapsed since September 11, 2001 and it is well established that at least several of the future hijackers were known to US government agencies, including the CIA and military intelligence, yet nothing was done to disrupt their operations. The most plausible explanation is that powerful forces within the US military/intelligence complex felt a terrorist incident on American soil would help shift public opinion, permitting the ruling elite to embark on a long-planned campaign of military intervention in Central Asia and the Middle East, as well as attacks on democratic rights at home. Whether or not the authorities could have known the scale of the impending attacks and what the precise targets or damage would be, they acted in such a manner as to prevent the apprehension of known terrorist operatives, thus permitting them to carry out their plot.

United 93 avoids even hinting at the unmentionable, that the Bush administration was aware of the possibility of a terrorist hijacking and ‘stood down’ its military and intelligence apparatus. At most the film suggests that the military was inept.

Greengrass’ artistic evasiveness has produced a film that is subject to almost any interpretation, including one that claims the post-9/11 world necessitates the prosecution of a one-size-fits-all-evils “war on terror,” a euphemism for the pursuit of American global domination.

“That final image haunts me—a physical struggle for the controls of a gasoline-fueled 21st century flying machine between a band of suicidal religious fanatics and a group of innocents drawn at random amongst us all ... I think of it often. It’s really, in a way, the struggle for our world today,” muses the director. Yes, as the film demonstrates, these are haunting images. But how different is this ahistorical clash-of-cultures outlook from that of the pro-war media? In the most neutral—and politically forgiving—of interpretations, United 93 hardly differs, in its final portions, from conventional thrillers and disaster films.

Greengrass subscribes to the notion that “you can’t sustain events like 9/11 without responding on some level militarily, otherwise democracy ceases to function, as one of the primary functions of the state is to protect us all.” The ultra-rightist Limbaugh agrees. He introduced Greengrass to his radio show by informing the audience that the director “suggests that we need a ‘consensus’ in coming up with ideas on how we’re going to ultimately defeat terrorism.”

Despite Greengrass’ shameful cozying up to the right-wing, United 93 has faced reprisals. Alsamari, the Iraqi-born, British actor who plays the lead hijacker, was denied a visa by the US government to attend the film’s New York City premiere.

The problem is Greengrass would not understand, or would not choose to understand, the bitter irony of this exclusion.

Then in a (Beyond the shadow) segment called 'The problem with Cynthia McKinney' we deal with why the State hates one it's own Representative in Congress. Why the corporate media loves to bash her. And why Rumsfeld bumbles in her company. Outlining that in this late stage of a degenerated capitalism order independent questions by one of their own can't be tolerated.

It paints a vague, non-judgmental picture of events that (in Dr. Siebert's view, apparently) no one could have foreseen or halted once the process started, and now we must accept this unfortunate accident with a tear and a sigh, and move on.
Accident or no accident?
If you see 6 or 7 vultures gathered in one place, at one time, doing one thing, you can be fairly certain that their activity and its outcome aren't accidental. I offer this imperfect analogy with my sincere apology to vultures, who, after all, perform a useful and necessary function in the scheme of things. The same can't be said for teen boot camps.
The video shown here gives a candid view of boot camp activity: the goading, taunting, being marshaled about, and more. Those push-ups and track work aren't fitness training by any stretch of the definition. What happens at boot camp has a very different purpose. And if you're a newly-arrived, lanky black kid who plays high school basketball and wears a fancy hairdo, you'd better watch your step. The vultures began making plans for you the moment you came through the gate. Get prepared to run until you drop, or they just might drop you. Toward the end of the video, we see it happen. We see a 14-year-old's last conscious moments in this life.

Is Another 9/11 in the Works?

If you were President George W. Bush with all available US troops tied down by the Iraqi resistance, and you were unable to control Iraq or political developments in the country, would you also start a war with Iran?

Yes, you would.

Bush’s determination to spread Middle East conflict by striking at Iran does not make sense.

First of all, Bush lacks the troops to do the job. If the US military cannot successfully occupy Iraq, there is no way that the US can occupy Iran, a country approximately three times the size in area and population.

Second, Iran can respond to a conventional air attack with missiles targeted on American ships and bases, and on oil facilities located throughout the Middle East.

Third, Iran has human assets, including the Shi'ite majority population in Iraq, that it can activate to cause chaos throughout the Middle East.

Fourth, polls of US troops in Iraq indicate that a vast majority do not believe in their mission and wish to be withdrawn. Unlike the yellow ribbon folks at home, the troops are unlikely to be enthusiastic about being trapped in an Iranian quagmire in addition to the Iraqi quagmire.

Fifth, Bush’s polls are down to 34 percent, with a majority of Americans believing that Bush’s invasion of Iraq was a mistake.

If you were being whipped in one fight, would you start a second fight with a bigger and stronger person?

That’s what Bush is doing.

Opinion polls indicate that the Bush regime has succeeded in its plan to make Americans fear Iran as the greatest threat America faces.

The Bush regime has created a major dispute with Iran over that country’s nuclear energy program and then blocked every effort to bring the dispute to a peaceful end.

In order to gain a pretext for attacking Iran, the Bush regime is using bribery and coercion in its effort to have Iran referred to the UN Security Council for sanctions.

In recent statements President Bush and Pentagon chief Donald Rumsfeld blamed Iran for the Iraqi resistance, claiming that the roadside bombs used by the resistance are being supplied by Iran.

It is obvious that Bush intends to attack Iran and that he will use every means to bring war about.

Yet, Bush has no conventional means of waging war with Iran. His bloodthirsty neoconservatives have prepared plans for nuking Iran. However, an unprovoked nuclear attack on Iran would leave the US, already regarded as a pariah nation, totally isolated.

Readers, whose thinking runs ahead of that of most of us, tell me that another 9/11 event will prepare the ground for a nuclear attack on Iran. Some readers say that Bush, or Israel as in Israel’s highly provocative attack on the Jericho jail and kidnapping of prisoners with American complicity, will provoke a second attack on the US. Others say that Bush or the neoconservatives working with some "black ops" group will orchestrate the attack.

One of the more extraordinary suggestions is that a low yield, perhaps tactical, nuclear weapon will be exploded some distance out from a US port. Death and destruction will be minimized, but fear and hysteria will be maximized. Americans will be told that the ship bearing the weapon was discovered and intercepted just in time, thanks to Bush’s illegal spying program, and that Iran is to blame. A more powerful wave of fear and outrage will again bind the American people to Bush, and the US media will not report the rest of the world’s doubts of the explanation.

Reads like a Michael Crichton plot, doesn’t it?

Fantasy? Let’s hope so.

Hero from Katrina evacuation faces federal indictment

NEW ORLEANS A man some saw as a hero for stealing a school bus the day after Hurricane Katrina to take 60 stranded New Orleaneans to safety in Houston faces drug and gun charges.

A federal grand jury in New Orleans has indicted Jabar Gibson on cocaine and heroin trafficking and gun possession charges.

Authorities say Gibson was carrying cocaine, heroin and a revolver when he was caught by New Orleans narcotics detectives and federal agents on January Seventh.

At the time of his arrest, he faced heroin charges in an unrelated case from November. New Orleans police say he tried to ditch the drugs while being chased by officers in a public housing complex.

Gibson got a movie deal and coast-to-coast media attention after he stole an Orleans Parish school bus and ferried 60 people from New Orleans to the Astrodome in Houston. He wasn't charged for swiping the bus.

The modern day Empire of America rest on two major pillars, it's military and the U.S. dollar. The U.S. dollar is part of the imperial order. RIVIERA BEACH, Fla., Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Officials of a poor, predominantly black Florida town plan to relocate about 6,000 residents to make room for a billion-dollar yachting and housing complex.

The coastal community of Rivera Beach in Palm Beach County may use eminent domain, if necessary, to claim 400 acres of land for the project, The Washington Times reported Monday.

"This is a community that's in dire need of jobs, which has a median income of less than $19,000 a year," Mayor Michael Brown said. "If we don't use this power, cities will die."

The U.S. Supreme Court in June upheld the use of eminent domain for economic purposes, ruling against a group of New London, Conn., homeowners fighting a proposed corporate development.

The City Council last week chose a New Jersey-based developer, Viking Inlet Harbor Properties LLC, to oversee the project, which is expected to displace 2,000 houses.

Viking has said it will pay at least the assessed values of homes and businesses it buys.

Dana Berliner, a lawyer who represented the New London homeowners, warned, "Once someone can be replaced, so something more expensive can go where they were, every home and business in the country is subject to taking by someone else."

In the first several days after New Orleans was inundated, these stories were disseminated by government officials at the federal, state and local level, and trumpeted by the media in banner headlines and lurid TV accounts.

Now that officials have been forced to admit that they had little or no evidence of armed thugs roaming the devastated city and mugging, raping and killing tourists and stranded residents, they and their media accomplices are seeking to explain away the disinformation campaign as the inadvertent result of confusion, fear and the breakdown in communications in New Orleans.

WASHINGTON Sep 30, 2005 — The White House on Friday criticized former Education Secretary William Bennett for remarks linking the crime rate and the abortion of black babies.

"The president believes the comments were not appropriate," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said.

Bennett, on his radio show, "Morning in America," was answering a caller's question when he took issue with the hypothesis put forth in a recent book that one reason crime is down is that abortion is up.

"But I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down," said Bennett, author of "The Book of Virtues."

He went on to call that "an impossible, ridiculous and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down. So these far-out, these far-reaching, extensive extrapolations are, I think, tricky."

Responding later to criticism, Bennett said his comments had been mischaracterized and that his point was that the idea of supporting abortion to reduce crime was "morally reprehensible."

Bennett was education secretary under President Reagan and director of drug control policy when Bush's father was president.

Yet the panic was enough for Baton Rouge Mayor-President Kip Holden to impose a curfew on the city's largest shelter, and to warn darkly about "New Orleans thugs."

Even before evacuees could get comfy in Houston's Astrodome, rumors were flying that the refugees had already raped their first victim, just like that 7-year-old in the Superdome, or the babies in the Convention Center who got their throats slit. Not only was the Astrodome rape invented out of whole cloth, so, perhaps was the case reported 'round the globe of at least one prepubescent being raped and murdered in New Orleans' iconic sports arena.

"We don't have any substantiated rapes," New Orleans Police superintendent Edwin Compass said Monday, according to the Guardian. "We will investigate if the individuals come forward."

WASHINGTON, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Rapper Kanye West surprised viewers of an NBC benefit concert for Hurricane Katrina victims on Friday by accusing President George W. Bush of racism.

"George Bush doesn't care about black people," West said from New York during the show aired live on the East Coast on NBC, MSNBC, CNBC and Pax, just before cameras cut away to comedian Chris Tucker.

West, who is black, suggested moments earlier that delays in providing relief to survivors of the hurricane that hit the U.S. Gulf Coast on Monday and flooded New Orleans were deliberate. He said America was set up "to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible."

The Grammy award-winning singer, who was paired with comedian Mike Myers, also said in what NBC described as unscripted remarks, "We already realized a lot of the people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way, and they've given them permission to go down and shoot us."

He was apparently referring to shoot-on-sight orders issued to National Guard troops to halt violence and looting in New Orleans.

West also criticized the media's portrayal of blacks, saying: "I hate the way they portray us in the media. If you see a black family, it says they're looting. See a white family, it says they're looking for food."

In a statement, NBC, a unit of General Electric Co. ,said, "Kanye West departed from the scripted comments that were prepared for him, and his opinions in no way represent the views of the networks.

"It would be most unfortunate," the statement continued, "if the efforts of the artists who participated tonight and the generosity of millions of Americans who are helping those in need are overshadowed by one person's opinion."

The program, hosted by Matt Lauer of NBC News, urged viewers to donate to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. It included 18 presenters, and featured performances by New Orleans natives Harry Connick Jr. and Wynton Marsalis, as well as Louisiana native Tim McGraw and Faith Hill of Mississippi, which was also struck by Katrina.

Tuesday, Yahoo! News posted photographs from the Hurricane Katrina disaster area gathered from various sources.

An Associated Press photograph of two African-American women was captioned, "Looters carry bags of groceries through floodwaters after taking the merchandise away from a wind damaged convenience store in New Orleans on Monday, Aug. 29, 2005."

A similar Agence France Press (AFP) photograph of two caucasians was labeled, "Two residents wade through chest-deep water after finding bread and soda from a local grocery store in New Orleans..."

The vast majority of people who did not evacuate from the famous city were poor and non-white; many were unable to obtain transportation.

Yahoo! News later released a statement on the images, saying, "...we present the photos and their captions as written, edited and distributed by the news services with no additional editing..." Yahoo! agreed to AFP's request to remove AFP-supplied photographs after the controversy began, fueled by articles on the topic by Salon, Flickr, and other news sites.

In an effort to poison public opinion about the incompetence of the government, the media lapdogs have bit on stories of looting, law and order, and the need for policing out of control Black folk. American racism permeates the newscasts, and the cracks in the system widen with each day people -- poor people -- sit in sewer water, rotting in the heat while the rich sit in comfortable chairs remaining disconnected from the reality around them.

There are a few articles which bring attention to the true concerns surfacing from beneath the rubble, but there's still a denial of the blatant racism in the media. I have heard the people of New Orleans referred to as "Animals" on networks. "Chaos," "refugees," "Third World," "National Disgrace" were the codes in speech used to describe Blacks who were angry, hungry, and in desperation began "looting."

When stores have closed because the upper class got in their SUVs and left town, and your home has been washed away, and no help is in sight, and your family is dirty, hungry, defeated, and you have a few soggy dollars in your pocket, and the stores are shut down, it is only human to say fuck the system, I'm getting my hands on what I need to survive. So you'll break into a store, take a few things, and at the very least you'll be taken by cops to a place that is safer than the infested water you and your family had to struggle through for three days.

For those who question the "looting" of items not needed for survival, I'll turn to what was written on another blog called the YellowLine. I didn't agree with everything written on that blog, but this sums up this particular subject neatly.

I'm not too broken up about people stealing from Wal-Mart, another highly questionable capitalist organization that will have no difficulty recouping their losses through insurance. Also, I take some small satisfaction in seeing people steal Nikes, a corporation that has built its empire on the backs of the poor in sweatshops worldwide. When a pair of $150 basketball shoes only cost you $12 to manufacture and $8 to market, there's a kind of equitable symmetry in seeing poor people steal these shoes...

Fuck this government and fuck all y'all who still vote for these clowns who serve the needs of the ruling class.

Book Review: On Bullshit

Leaked documents from an independent investigation proves two facts that most Black Americans already know and could have told the British. The first fact is that the cops shot De Menezes for no other reason other than he fit a profile. The second fact is that the media quickly took the side of the authorities who made wild claims to why this man was murdered.

PHILADELPHIA May 14, 2005 — Under the watchful eyes of police and neighbors, the militant group MOVE marked the 20th anniversary Saturday of the police bombing that destroyed the organization's home and killed 11 members.

Group members and supporters gathered in West Philadelphia near the site where police trying to evict armed MOVE members from a rowhouse dropped an explosive from a helicopter. Officers then ordered firefighters to keep their distance as flames killed six adults and five children and consumed 61 adjacent homes.

"We will never allow another May 13, 1985," MOVE supporter Orie Ross shouted through a bullhorn to about 75 people. "Our family can't be replaced."

The group, which once espoused equality with animals, had clashed with neighbors and police long before the bombing. Neighbors complained that group members shouted from bullhorns late into the night, were confrontational and unsanitary, and jogged on people's roofs.

At the rally, members called for the release of the "MOVE 9" those they said were wrongly convicted in the 1978 death of police officer James Ramp. Eight remain in prison; the ninth died of cancer in 1998.

Today, MOVE has a few dozen members, most of whom live in a pair of houses in Philadelphia's Kingsessing neighborhood. Other residents of the block describe them as good neighbors.

The group, which once preached against technology, now has a Web site. It describes itself as a revolutionary organization that believes in life, natural law and self defense but rejects the government and big business.

Neighbors watched Saturday's rally from their front stoops, some shaking their heads and eyeing the event suspiciously. Several declined to comment on the demonstration or the anniversary, saying they preferred to put it behind them.

Some neighbors have been fighting the city since the day of the fire. Embarrassed city officials promised to rebuild, but the new houses were defective and millions of dollars spent on repairs failed to solve the problems.

SLAVE REVOLT RADIO removed from KPFT

I regret to inform yall that my regular airing of segments from Slave Revolt Radio, in the mix with anti-Zionist, Takes on the World, Jeffrey Blankfort, and the occasional Mix from Skidmark Bob out of FRSC, has been removed from KPFT's schedule as of the beginning of this month.

Gentleman, it was a good run, and the program was quite well received, and also did well in fund drives.

The reasons for removing this program are beyond me, perhaps it was not a good fit in the new improved vision of KPFT, and a forward looking sound, of radio, moving forward, in this era of moving forwardness. But I can say this, it was a goddam pleasure airing material and segments from your program over the past year.

Considering the unnacceptability of Slave Revolt Radio on a moving forward station like KPFT, perhaps yall should consider making some adjustments toward team playerdness, and wider audience appeal.

Here are a few suggestions:

1. Stop sounding so Black. Check out Tavis Smiley, Armstrong Williams, and reruns of Arsenio Hall. These people have African American overtones in their dialect, yet, they refrain from sounding... well you know..... so BLACK.
Google Bill Cosby for further information on this subject.

Slave Revolt has an Ebonically 'uppity' sound, which scares the wider audience, who are turned off by this.

2. Your infatuation with labor, working people, class consciousness, closet Marxism, and so forth, is a subject that is well covered by the many white luminaries in alternative media. Yall should leave these headier issues to White Folks, and focus on Black issues.

3. Your infatuation with Black issues, like prison reform, police brutality, education in minority communities, and the economic draft, are obtuse and fringe, and do not bode well for attracting a larger audience to your otherwise excellent program.

4. How can you expect to be taken seriously, while you criticize Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Martin Luther King, Cornell West, etc, etc. Free Speech has its limits, even in alternative media. Just ask Ward Churchill.

5. Many of your programs seem to have an underlying current of revolution. This revolution stuff played out in the sixties, and perhaps you should consider making your program more 'current'

6. You have often criticized the programming at KPFA Berkely. As well as KALW and other excellent Public Radio Stations in the Bay Area, which is the Citadel of forward thinking moving forwardness. Perhaps your time would be more well spent, criticizing the Far Right, and stop your devisive ranting, which divides us all from the essential work of moving forward. It's time for all of us to unite, and time for you to decide when it is necessary to take a back seat for the good of the whole. Rosa Parks is not always a good fit, you have to learn when to step forward, and when to take your proper place in society, no matter what the geography of public transportation.

7. Atheism is WAAAAY retro, and criticizing Islam is out of the question, they are the oppressed, and your crticism of oppressed people is counter-productive. . All of your complaints about Arab and Muslim colonialism in Africa are as old as colonialism itself, which ended , in the post colonialist era, which was awhile ago, not sure exactly when, but Slave Revolt needs to move forward into the present, forward into this new post colonialist period. And please stop putting forward these 'globalization' conspiracy theories.

I hope you take these criticisms to heart, and together, with a more nuanced Slave Revolt Radio, we can all move forward , and spread the message, together, unified, as one voice.

A Secret World, A New World Order, and Blog Censorship

Having gotten my fill of Terry Schiavo, Michael Jackson, Baseball and steroids, Jane Fonda, and the Pope, I felt compelled to turn off the television, set down the newspapers, move away from the radio, and take a break from the so called "legitimate news."

Every now and then, I’m haunted by this nagging need to slum thru the evil Internet, and visit websites not recommended by FOX, CNN, NPR, The New York Times, Judith Miller, Rush Limbaugh, or Homeland Security.

My adventure began with the website MADCOW MORNING NEWS, a site I have posted links to in the past. Daniel Hopsicker – a great name – never fails to fulfill my need for disturbing investigative journalism straight from the Wizard of Oz. It’s as if he lives in a parallel world of espionage, covert operations, and cults. The truly disturbing part is that every twisted story is based on an even more twisted fact. If our government wasn’t so damn corrupt, stories like the ones Daniel Hopsicker – great name – comes up with wouldn’t catch curious eyes like mine.

This month’s installment has Daniel Hopsicker – great name – looking into the lives of two men: Abdussattar Shaikh and Sam Koutchesfahani.

Who are they, you ask?

Soon after the September 11 attacks, there were a few blurbs in the corporate-controlled media about one Abdussattar Shaikh. He’s the man who had two hijackers living in his house in San Diego while operating at the same time as a confidential informant for the FBI. Oh yeah, he also has a link to Sam Koutchesfahani, whose family roots and wealth ran deep in Iran. Sam pleaded guilty to tax evasion and fraud and was sentenced to a year in prison. Sam also was the owner of a rented house in Rancho Santa Fe where 39 members of the Heaven's Gate cult took their lives in 1997. He also ran guns for the Shaw of Iran back in the day. How this all comes together is where Daniel Hopsicker – great name – earns his donations. Check it out. It won’t disappoint.

Moseying along, I bring you to an old ALEX JONES article on the Oklahoma City bombing and the way CNN willingly reported disinformation for the Government.

It goes a little something like this:

Connie Chung (yes it’s that old) did an interview in which she links Al-Qaeda to Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, and a right-wing Aryan militia group. Talk about conspiracy theories. It’s an interesting article and analysis of the propaganda coming from “legitimate” news sources. It also exposes some of the hysteria Alex Jones is guilty of, but I still find him informative.

Not long after reading that Alex Jones article, I perused through my email, and came across a couple of links to videos someone suggested I’d download. Being the risk taker I am, I download these videos straight to my hard drive. Nothing blew up or went blue, but what did happen fell in line with the disturbing Twilight Zone world of Daniel Hopsicker – great name.

Her name is Kay Griggs. She’s the wife of an ex soldier, who had ties to many covert operations. He left a diary. In it, were some names and places, some of which Kay shares on video to a phantom interviewer. Now, besides the homophobia, anti-Semitism, and Anglo-Christian rhetoric, there’s some interesting stuff in these videos. Freaky. Here are the links. Download and watch Part one and Part two.

Now after coming to terms with what Mrs. Griggs had to say, and how what she said rhymed with the shady story of Jeff Gannon, I stumbled over another article. This one from a more “reputable” news source.

Over at ZDNET, they have an article called BLOG CENSORSHIP WINS SUPPORT. It of course begins with the problem of kids who post dirty things and personal information about classmates and peers, but then quickly leads us into the real mission, which is to stop any investigative journalism on the Internet, especially anything having to do with politics, the military, and big business.

I don’t know about you, but I’d like to have the Daniel Hopsickers, Alex Jones’s, and the Kaye Griggs’s around, as long as we have to suffer the Bill O’Reillys, Rush Limbaughs, and Connie Chungs.

The Tyrant’s Playbook: Hitler’s Strategy Proves Timeless

Many Americans, regardless of political persuasion, understand that America has embarked upon a march toward tyranny throughout the 20th century. Since 9/11, the march has sped to a near sprint. The American founding and Constitution, however, established protections against centralized tyranny. This protection of liberty, in fact, was the central priority of the Founding Fathers. If we want to prevent tyranny from completely enveloping our nation, we would do well not only to renew our commitment to the principles of our founding, but also to learn the lessons of history, particularly embodied in the obvious five-step playbook of tyrants, such as Adolph Hitler. One could write an entire book paralleling Hitler’s dictatorship with the recent American experience in near-tyranny. For now, briefly summarizing this elementary five-step game plan is a simple yet shockingly necessary exercise.

Step 1: Eliminate the Legislative Process

Our Founding Fathers understood that the legislative branch, being closest to the people, would be the most powerful branch of government, most representative of the individual liberties of the people. Likewise, Hitler knew that to wield total power, he needed to do away with the legislature. In Germany, the destruction of the legislative branch began symbolically at the burning of the Reichstag. Following this event, after Hitler used the event to instigate fear of communists, the legislature signed its own death warrant, as it passed the Enabling Act. This act gave Hitler total executive power without formally abrogating the Weimar Constitution. The constitution was simply seen as a “living document.”

This executive power-grab is reminiscent of countless parallels in American 20th century history. Examples range from the abuse of the executive order to legislation such as the Patriot Act II being drafted by the executive branch. Additionally, one glaring example of an executive power-grab in recent history is the power to declare war. While the U.S. Constitution clearly gives Congress that power, they have avoided their duty to declare war for a half-century, giving the President discretion and power.

Step 2: Destroy Federalism

One of the most important and most neglected amendments in our constitution is the 10th Amendment. Unlike our Founding Fathers, Hitler did not want state powers to compete with the central government. In fact, he abolished all state assemblies and implanted a Nazi-friendly governor in each of the states to execute the decrees of the central government. He understood that states exercising their constitutionally granted powers would only inhibit his desired outcome: total centralized control.

Like others, this Nazi development has been paralleled in the U.S. Hardly any Americans even understand that, according to the Constitution, nearly all of our Federal Government actions are unconstitutional. According to the 10th Amendment, the Federal Government only has the power to do what the expressed powers of the Constitution grant it the power to do. All other powers are reserved to the states and the people. This fact is ignored simply because it would discredit all benevolent and tyrannical Federal Government actions. State power, according to the Founding Fathers, was to be much more powerful than Federal power. Our departure from this intention is one of the central reasons we are witnessing the waywardness of our Federal Government.

Step 3: Create an Enemy and Declare “Homeland Security”

For Hitler, the central “boogy-men” were the communists and the Jews. He blamed the burning of the Reichstag (which he most likely carried out himself) on the communists, and used the Jews as a scapegoat for the struggling German economy. He then declared that he, their leader, would protect them. He called his program, “Fatherland Security,” and took away all individual liberties such as freedom of speech and the press in the name of security. All dissent was stigmatized and marginalized as “treason.”

The parallels in the U.S. on this point are endless. Obviously, the Bill of Rights and especially the 1st Amendment are the most important element of our Constitution. But, due to the government fear mongering that has occurred since 9/11, security, rather than liberty has become the priority. Countless examples of intimidation, jailing, and outlawing political speech have arisen in the past 3 years. Those who question or oppose government policy are branded as terrorists. Under “Homeland Security,” we are told that we need to find a “balance” between liberty and security. This balance was completely absent from the philosophy of the Founding Fathers. This is one of the most dangerous developments in America today.

Step 4: Disarm the People

Using common sense, Hitler realized that an armed citizenry would threaten his power. He was fortunate enough to simply use gun control laws that were already on the books, enacted under the Weimar Republic, to disarm the German people. In 1938, five years after his rise to power, he enacted further measures to complete this disarmament.

Our Founding Fathers included a Bill of Rights in the Constitution as a check on government, intended to protect the people from government. While many liberal intellectuals argue that the 2nd Amendment was never intended to apply to individual citizens, this claim is laughable in light of the central purpose of the entire Bill of Rights. Unfortunately, due to the co-action of both the Left and the Right, gun control laws have been passed and upheld in America in a complete dismantling of the 2nd Amendment.

Step 5: Nationalize Police Forces and Establish Secret and Military-Style Police

In order for Hitler to maintain control, he knew that he needed a mad band of storm troopers along with an extensive spy agency. He achieved both of these after incorporating and abolishing state and local police forces. His badgeless S.S. and Gestapo forces terrorized the people forcing them to always be ready to display “travel papers.” In addition to formal police forces, an extensive spy network was formed, even using children to inform on their teachers and parents.

Our Founding Fathers intended that government would be transparent, the people would have rights to privacy, and state and local governments would control law enforcement. All of these important concepts have become casualties of Homeland Security America. Under the Homeland Security Department, all state and local police forces are being incorporated under Federal power. In addition, the courts have ruled that citizens no longer have the right to refuse to show their I.D. (travel papers) to police, while at the same time, military-style law enforcement agents refuse to identify themselves to law-abiding citizens. The Pentagon’s Total Information Awareness Network exemplified this inversion artistically through their logo: the all-seeing eye casting its gaze upon the earth.

Conclusion

In conclusion, our Founding Fathers rightly noted that governments naturally become tyrannical over time (“when in the course of events…”). Is it a radical claim to argue that the U.S. is not immune to such natural developments? When one understands the fallen state of man, observes the repetition of history, and becomes aware of current events, such a claim is undeniable. If the American people don’t stand up and call this movement what it is, we will lose America and descend into despotism.

Class War: Rich Beaches, Poor Beaches

Let's charge those people $10 to get to a lousy beach and maybe they'll go away. Let's charge them $10 to go to a lousy beach while we go to Caladesi Island on our $50,000 boats, burning precious fuel and spilling motor oil in the gulf.

This leads to other revelations:

I do not want my tax dollars to pay for baseball stadiums or for developing properties for private corporations. I do not want my tax dollars paying for school busing. I want better paid teachers, better school buildings and smaller classrooms.

Academy Awards and Superficial Achievements

No one should be impressed by claims that Rock’s hosting, the victories of Foxx and Freeman and the omnipresence of Beyonce Knowles represent a great step forward for African-Americans. They represent rather a further step forward for a privileged layer of the black upper middle class, who quite rightly see no connection between their fate and that of the black working population.

In 1964 when Sidney Poitier, accepting an award for Lilies of the Field, declared, “It has been a long journey to this moment,” it came out of something, the civil rights struggle, and it meant something in a limited way. Today, frankly, Foxx, Freeman, Oprah Winfrey and their ilk lead an existence fit for royalty, an existence utterly remote from the lives of ordinary Americans, black or white. Alternet (an establishment left website) put together an interview with Donald Bogle, Film and Television historian, in which he unwittingly reveals the basic divide in the Black community, a divide that's been brushed under the rug in other ethnic circles.

"Today, people like Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, just about live and go wherever they want. L.A. did not have the signs "For colored, for whites," the way you'd find in the South. Everyone I interviewed from that earlier period said it was very clear that you were supposed to be able go wherever you wanted, but they knew there were places where there could be problems. So there was this separate community."

Now, if you were to take the easy distraction of color out of the equation, and replace it with class, then ask yourself, how has anything changed? If a poor Black, White, or Red were to try and ride thru any of these celebrity neighborhoods, they'd be pulled over and tasered! That's the real divide, that's the issue no one in the mainstream media brings to light, and that's the reason Black faces in high places matters little for the advancement of all people.

Fellini once said that in the mythology of the cinema, the Oscar is the ultimate. The Oscar puts someone just in a whole other class...

Tavis Smiley and his joke of a conference called "State of the Black Union" played on C-Span Saturday. I won't get into the details of this Style-Over-Substance show of (Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Farrakhan...etc.) but I'll leave you with this.

How can you have a seven hour discussion about Blacks in America and not spend one minute on THE WAR ON DRUGS or THE PRISON INDUSTRIAL SYSTEM?

And a funny note: They discussed health problems in the Black community, asking why Black children are so obese, but never brought up all the fast food on every block and in every school. Maybe, just maybe, that's because McDonald's sponsored the damn conference. How do I know that? Because as these Niggas asked about what Blacks can do to stay healthy, the golden arches of McDonald's hung over their heads in the background!

Too many old establishment Niggas want to lead Blacks into the abyss. Fuck 'em.

What's Up With Oregon?

I'll admit to not having known, or even cared much about Oregon, but now, because of a sensational suicide pact, the state at the northwest corner has my complete attention, and maybe will soon have the unwanted attention of many. I say unwanted because to examine Oregon is to examine the current economic climate of the state and a window into the future of America’s economy. But before getting into economic trends lets begin with the sensational stuff, the stuff FOX News lovingly wallows in, except with just a wee bit more depth.

Gerald Krein, 26, was arrested after he used e-mail to try to recruit for a mass suicide set for Valentine’s Day. This plot involved over thirty people across the United States and Canada, according to authorities.

A woman who was going to join these poor souls had second thoughts when another chat room participant said she’d take the lives of her two children before offing herself. This shook the woman to contact police.

The police found Gerald at his mother’s mobile home in Klamath Falls. He faces charges of solicitation to commit murder.

Now this story is reported through the predictable mainstream as an example of how “evil” the Internet is, and will surely raise discussions on policing the Internet. This is a ploy. The Internet has been the only source of honest investigative journalism, keeping an eye on power, and “they” know this, which is why sorry individuals like Gerald Krein are so helpful for the Gestapo. But I digress. The story being avoided is the poverty weighing on the citizens of Oregon. Remember, Gerald Krein is a twenty-six year old man, in a mobile home, with his mother. There’s a reason for this.

Oregon has the highest jobless and hunger levels in the country. Four years after the recession of 2001, the employment level remains below pre-recession level. An estimated 50,800 workers in Oregon have lost their Unemployment Insurance benefits in 2004.

Bush continues to make sweeping cuts to raise money for the Iron Triangle.

Those government programs that have traditionally assisted the poor have either been eliminated or had their funding reduced. Oregon’s primary welfare program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), has not increased the minimum income level required to qualify for help since 1991: $616 per month.

The Oregon Health Plan (OHP) has followed a similar path. Initially formed to provide health coverage to the working poor, the standard program of OHP has been progressively stripped of funding.

Oregon’s economy had been driven by agriculture, which has been subject to falling commodity prices in the face of globalized competition and is heavily reliant on poorly paid workers, many of whom are undocumented Hispanic residents (illegal aliens), which of course help drive wages into the dirt.

Higher-paying, “family-wage” jobs have been gradually replaced by lower paying jobs in the service sector. This isn’t an indictment of undocumented workers (illegal aliens), it’s an example of how DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS whore themselves to the financial elite and feed the people to the “Free-Market” beast.

During the 2003-2004 fiscal year—a year, it should be noted, that has been described by the Bush administration as one in which the economy was “rebounding”—the state’s network of non-profit pantries, warehouses and local food bank affiliates distributed a record 721,000 food boxes, an 11 percent increase from the previous fiscal year.

The beginning of the sharp and steady rise in food box distribution by the Oregon Food Bank coincides precisely, and not surprisingly, with former President Bill Clinton’s “welfare reform” act in 1996.

The Oregon Center for Public Policy (OCPP), a liberal think tank, published a damning study on the conditions facing the working class and the increasing numbers of working poor in the state of Oregon.

The study is called In the Shadows of the Recovery: The State of Working Oregon 2004, and it details the impact of the recession. It’s also an indictment on the recent policies of both DEMOCRATCS AND REPUBLICANS. It covers jobs, wages, health, housing, prices, etc.

Economic pressure resulted in a spurt of alternative lenders who offer “subprime” home refinancing, payday loans, pawnshop loans, and higher-interest credit cards. The OCPP study brings attention to the increased rate of foreclosures and loss of property due to these life-snuffing loans.

The payday loan industry grew substantially in the last few years, now outnumbering McDonald’s restaurants in Oregon. Many workers are “living” only by borrowing from their future paychecks at shamefully astronomic rates.

The superficial recovery doesn’t help the underclass of Oregon because their existence due to bankruptcies, accumulated debt, and deferred healthcare while jobless has placed them so deep underwater drowning seems more sane than struggling for a breath.

The Human Toll

Here are stories, taken from local press reports.

A couple of weeks ago, the state capitol building in Salem, Oregon, was disrupted for an hour when a distraught 54-year-old man, swearing loudly and carrying a 10-inch knife, walked into the Senate chamber and threatened to kill himself.

The incident was caught on the building’s internal video system. Boyd A. Owens entered the Oregon Senate Chamber a few minutes before lawmakers were to convene their 11:15 a.m. floor session on Monday, January 31. Police said 15 people were in the chamber and fled as Owens took a seat at the base of the Senate president’s podium, holding a knife in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

An Oregon lawmaker who also is a physician attempted to talk to Owens before a trained police negotiator took over. Before Owens surrendered peacefully an hour later, much of the building had been overrun by officers with the Oregon State Police and sharpshooters. As he was escorted handcuffed down the capitol steps, Owens turned to reporters and TV cameras. “I’m disabled!” he screamed. “I need housing! That’s all!”

Last February, shortly after Oregon’s voters had rejected the tax increase referred by lawmakers, a 22-year-old woman named Farrah Russell suffering from schizophrenia received a letter from the state. “The program which allows you to get a cash payment and medical card each month is ending ... Russell had just moved out of her parents’ home into her own apartment, which is where she committed suicide one day after receiving a 72-hour eviction notice. She killed herself by swallowing a 30-day supply of anti-psychotic pills.

That same month, a 60-year-old bipolar disorder patient, Douglas Bean, broke down after the relatively inexpensive community-based mental health services that allowed him to live in his own apartment, at a cost to the state of about $2,000 annually, were discontinued. Bean was first treated in an emergency room, and then spent a week in a psychiatric unit, racking up $7,000 in medical bills.

Last March, a 36-year-old disabled Portland man named Douglas K. Schmidt suffered a massive seizure after losing his state pharmaceutical benefit, which he used for anti-seizure medication. He slipped into a coma, where he remained until late November, when a court-appointed guardian authorized doctors to remove Schmidt from the ventilator. The bills for the nearly nine months of medical care he required since collapsing March 1 came to about $1 million. The anti-seizure drug Lamictal, one of two state-funded medications that Schmidt could no longer obtain, cost $13 per day.

Oregon has been long regarded by comfortable layers of the middle class and bourgeois image-makers as an oasis where “things look different” from other, “troubled” regions, but it is hardly immune from the horrors of school shootings and mass killings. Since a troubled 15-year-old boy in the working class community of Springfield (about two hours south of Portland) killed his parents in 1998 and then opened fire in his high school, killing two students and wounding 22 others, Oregon has had not one, but three such extraordinary crimes within a period of one year.

Late in December 2001, the bodies of three small children, ages two, three and four4, and their 35-year-old mother were found in the shallows of two inlets on the Oregon coast. The husband and father, Christian Longo, was found guilty of the murders and is currently awaiting execution at a state prison in Salem.

Barely two months later, a 37-year-old man, Robert Bryant, killed his three children with a shotgun while they slept, murdered his wife, and then shot himself to death in a small community southwest of Portland. In December of that year, the bodies of three children and their pregnant mother were found dumped in the Tillamook Forest in Northwestern Oregon. The father, Edward Morris, has been indicted by a grand jury in the killings and is awaiting trial.

According to press accounts, all three men had skirted with financial ruin in the months before the killings.

More could be said about such crimes—much more, at any rate, than the helpless banalities served up by Oregon’s timid press. After Longo was captured hiding in Mexico, the Oregonian’s editorial writers sadly shook their heads and declared that “it’s impossible to imagine any explanation” for such a horrific offense, and then called for the death penalty.

GARY WEBB 1955-2004
In August, 1996, when he worked at the San José Mercury News, Webb disclosed how the CIA sold tons of crack in Los Angeles neighborhoods and afterwards used the money from this trafficking to finance the operations of the Nicaraguan Contras who were then trying to overthrow Nicaragua’s Sandinista government.

JAMES FORMAN 1928-2005
While registering voters and organizing protests in the South he was repeatedly harassed, beaten and jailed. He once wrote "Accumulating experiences with Southern 'law and order' were turning me into a full-fledged revolutionary."

SUSAN SONTAG 1933-2004
Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes once compared Sontag to the Renaissance humanist Erasmus. Fuentes said QUOTE "Erasmus traveled with 32 volumes, which contained all the knowledge worth knowing. Susan Sontag carries it in her brain! I know of no other intellectual who is so clear-minded, with a capacity to link, to connect, to relate. She is unique."

SHIRLEY CHISHOLM 1924-2005
Shirley Chisholm was a leading advocate for civil liberties and the rights of working people, in Congress. She worked to end the draft and to repeal the Internal Security Act of 1950, which even in the late 1960's allowed for suspected subversives to be detained in emergency detention camps.

JOHN HESS 1917-2005
In 1977, he co-wrote a book with his wife Karen Hess titled "The Taste of America." In it they wrote "How shall we tell our fellow Americans that our palates have been ravaged, that our food is awful, and that our most respected authorities on cookery are poseurs?"

ARTIE SHAW 1910-2004
Despite Jim Crow segregation, which made touring with racially integrated bands practically impossible, Shaw courageously took his band on the road with Billie Holiday as his female vocalist. Unfortunately, the results were often highly unpleasant, as this giant of American song was forced to eat her meals on the bus while the other musicians enjoyed a restaurant, and she frequently lodged in someone’s home while the rest of the band stayed in a hotel.

Anti-Depressant Depressant

Prozac and other anti-depressant drugs have been proven to be linked to violent outbursts. This is not to say, that the following people didn't have real problems fed by social forces beyond their control, yet it is safe to say, that Prozac along with other mood drugs push people over the edge. This is another example of profit over people as the drug companies continue to push their poison on the public.

Here is the blood drenched history of anti-depressants.

ELI LILLY IN PROZAC CONTROVERSY

LONDON (CBS.MW) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is reviewing internal Eli Lilly documents that suggest the antidepressant Prozac may be linked to violent behavior, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday, quoting a U.K. medical journal.

PROZAC'S GREATEST HITS

1. On May 25, 1997 18-year-old Jeremy Strohmeyer raped and murdered a 7-year-old African American girl in Las Vegas, Nevada. Strohmeyer had been diagnosed with ADD and prescribed Dexedrine, a Ritalin-like drug, immediately prior to the killing.

2. On October 1, 1997, in Pearl Mississippi, 16-year-old Luke Woodham stabbed his mother, 50-year-old Mary Woodham, to death and then went to his high school where he shot nine people, killing two teenage girls and wounding seven others. Published reports say he was on Prozac.

3. Exactly two months later on Dec 1, 1997, Michael Carneal, a 14-year-old, opened fire on students at a high school prayer meeting in West Paducah, Kentucky. Three teenagers were killed, five others were wounded, one of whom was paralyzed. Carneal was reportedly on Ritalin.

4. Then in February 1998, in Huntsville, Alabama, Jeffery Franklin, 17, on Ritalin went psychotic, chopping up his parents with an ax and also killing one sibling and almost murdering another.

5. On March 24, 1998 in Jonesboro, Arkansas, 11-year-old Andrew Golden and 14-year-old Mitchell Johnson shot 15 people killing four students, one teacher, and wounding 10 others. According to one report, the boys were believed to be on Ritalin.

6. Two months later another grisly school massacre occurred. On May 21, 1998 15-year-old Kip Kinkel of Springfield, Oregon murdered his parents and proceeded to his high school where he went on a rampage killing two students and wounding 22 others. Kinkel had been prescribed both Prozac and Ritalin.

7. On April 16, 1999, 15-year-old Shawn Cooper of Notus, Idaho took a 12-gauge shot gun to school and started firing, injuring one student and holding the school hostage for about 20 minutes. Terrified students ran for their lives, some barricading themselves in classrooms. Cooper had been taking Ritalin when he fired the shotgun's rounds.

8. Eighteen-year-old Eric Harris killed 12 students and a teacher at Columbine High School before killing himself. Harris was on one of the SSRI anti-depressants called Luvox.

9. A month later to the day, on May 20, 1999 T.J. Solomon, a 15-year-old high school student in Conyers, Georgia, on Ritalin(r), opened fire on and wounded six of his classmates. Thankfully, none were killed.

10. Fourteen-year-old Rod Mathews who had been prescribed Ritalin(r) since the third grade beat a classmate to death with a bat.

11. Nineteen-year-old James Wilson, who had been on psychiatric drugs for 5 years, took a .22 caliber revolver into an elementary school in Breenwood, South Carolina, killing two young girls and wounding seven other children and two teachers.

FLASHBACK: OUT OF CONTROL CBS News

According to national news reports in January 1999, ten days after Ryan Ehlis, a college student in Bismark, North Dakota, began taking Adderall to control his attention deficit disorder and to help him with his college studies, he slipped into a psychotic fog and killed his infant daughter. He said God told him to do it. The courts found him innocent after testimony by a psychiatrist and by the manufacturer of the drug that the "psychotic state" was a very rare side effect of Adderall use.

The list includes: 15-year-old Kip Kinkle withdrawing from Prozac when he shot 22 classmates, killing two, after murdering his mother and stepfather at his home in Springfield, Oregon; 14-year-old Elizabeth Bush on Prozac when she blasted away at fellow students in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, wounding one; 18-year-old Jason Hoffman on Effexor and Celexa when he opened fire at his California high school wounding five; 15-year-old Shawn Cooper on a mix of antidepressants when he shot students in Idaho; 15-year-old T.J. Solomon, also on a mix of antidepressants when he aimed his shotgun at classmates in Conyers, Georgia, wounding six; and 17-year-old Eric Harris on Luvox when he and partner, Dylan Klebold, killed 12 classmates and a teacher in the bloodiest school massacre yet, Columbine.

FLASHBACK: COLUMBINE SHOOTER WAS PRESCRIBED ANTI-DEPRESSANT CNN

It is one of a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). Other SSRIs are Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft. Prozac is the most commonly prescribed anti-depressant in the United States.

Before going on a wild shooting spree at his Springfield Oregon high school that left 2 dead and 22 injured, Kip Kinkel had been attending anger control classes and was taking a prescription drug called Prozac. This particular drug has factored in almost all wild shooting sprees which have taken place in the last ten years. Eli Lilly of Indianapolis, Indiana was recently sued over the homicidal tendencies this drug is alleged to induce in patients. Prozac is commonly given to youth as a treatment for depression.

As the media blitz over the tsunami tragedy in South Asia continues with the media death toll counter rising in comparison to the aid like a sick game show gone wrong, and the hearts of Americans bleed for the dead vacationites (vacationites who exploit third world countries) and the children (children who have been under oppressive military governments supported by big oil companies and Western intelligence agencies) , it comes to mind other tragedies which didn't and doesn't seem to gain much momentum in the Anglo-Established press, but now since both "left" and "right" seems to be in an altruistic mood, here's a few other cases that deserve some attention and MONEY:

IRAQ SANCTIONS REPARATIONS

The United Nations estimated 1 million Iraqis, mostly children, died under the sanctions.

Madeline Albright was asked whether the over half a million children killed by the [Iraqi] sanctions were "worth it." Her response was: "It’s a hard choice, but I think, we, think, it’s worth it." [60 Minutes, May 11, 1996]

Now over a hundred thousand more have been killed by a war mongering government. How much will it cost to pay the people of Iraq back?

SUDAN

Some 50,000 people have died in the last 9 months, 1.3 million civilians have been uprooted from their homes and 2 million people are in need of relief.

The history of Sudan is the history of Africa, where oil, religion, tribal splits, and the arms trade has led to a form of genocide.

HAITI

How much longer should the people of Haiti suffer for having the balls to kick out the slave masters and demand their freedom?

The financial elites have killed Haiti with debts to France and the IMF.

A.I.D.S. has ripped apart families.

Haitians are not granted the same treatment as Cuban refugees in the United States.

The United States has helped destabilize Haitian democracy.

Haitians are treated like shit. Nuff said.

RWANDA

A new film, described as the next Schindler's List will bring some superficial attention to what has been a cloudy story. Cloudy because the context and source of what led to the million deaths has not and will not be told in the mainstream, because history has been and will continue to be whitewashed. The international community, especially those who profited from African slave labor needs to dish out more money and less pain.

EL MOZOTE MASSACRE

El Salvador suffered under Reagan policies, and the policies helped bring tons of cocaine into the United Staes while locking up brown people over the war on drugs.

El Mozote is one of many stories ignored in the mainstream.

On 10 December 1981, in the village of El Mozote in the Department of Morazan, units of the Atlacatl Battalion detained, without resistance, all the men, women and children who were in the place. The following day, 11 December, after spending the night locked in their homes, they were deliberately and systematically executed in groups. First, the men were tortured and executed, then the women were executed and, lastly, the children, in the place where they had been locked up. …

These events occurred in the course of an anti-guerrilla action known as "Operacion Rescate" in which, in addition to the Atlacatl Battalion, units from the Third Infantry Brigade and the San Francisco Gotera Commando Training Centre took part.

VIETNAM LANDMINES

* The U.S. State Department estimates that there are 3.5 million landmines in Vietnam.

* The Vietnamese government estimates that 16,478 million square meters of territory are still affected by landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) leftover from the Vietnam War.

* Since the end of the war in 1975, more than 38,000 people have been killed and 64,000 injured by landmines and unexploded ordnance.

* The US State Department reports that Vietnam suffers over 2000 casualties a year from landmines and unexploded ordinance.

The United States owes the Vietnam people.

CONCLUSION

These sorry attempts by the media to show how concerned and generous the Anglo-Establishment is over the deaths due to the tsunami "surprise" is bullshit. If the Western world was really concerned, the debts owed to the WORLD BANK, IMF, and the PARIS CLUB, by Thailand and other suffering countries, would be relieved. The head man in charge, whether it be Tony Blair or George Bush Jr, could place pressure on these financial pirates, BUT THEY WON'T, because they know who the masters are, and they know who the slaves are, and they will spend tens of billions to bomb the slaves, while squeezing a few million to show how much they care about the slaves, in order to sedate a possible slave revolt.

United States of Guinea Pigs

The same government who makes excuses as the poor, the disposable, the voiceless are used as guinea pigs for the greater good of the ruling elite and their deep pockets.

There were too many to list them all, so I picked the most recent and popular ones to make it easy to digest. So if you turn on your television tonight and watch these talking heads and politicians start debating about God, religion, and family values, just remember this list:

NEW YORK'S HIV EXPERIMENT 2004

Jacklyn Hoerger's job was to treat children with HIV at a New York children's home.

But nobody had told her that the drugs she was administering were experimental and highly toxic.

"We were told that if they were vomiting, if they lost their ability to walk, if they were having diarrhoea, if they were dying, then all of this was because of their HIV infection."

In fact it was the drugs that were making the children ill and the children had been enrolled on the secret trials without their relatives' or guardians' knowledge.

CHILDREN FORCED TO TAKE DRUGS 2002

In 2002, the Incarnation Children's Center - a children's home in Harlem - was at the hub of controversy over secretive drugs trials.

Jamie speaks to a boy who spent most of his life at Incaranation. Medical records, obtained by the This World team, prove the boy had been enrolled in these trials.

"I did not want to take my medication," said the boy, "but if you want to get out of there, you have to do what they say."

He also conveys a horrifying account of what happened to the children at Incarnation who refused to obey the rules. "My friend Daniel didn't like to take his medicine and he got a tube in his stomach," he said.

BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION PROGRAM AT VACAVILLE PRISON 1970's

Pemoline (a drug used on children for A.D.D.) was used on prisoners of the infamous Vacaville Prison under the direction of Dr. James Hamilton, as confirmed in an October 18, 1978 letter from Frank C. Carlucci, the Deputy Director of the CIA to Congressman Leo Ryan. According to Mae Brussell, Donald DeFreeze was a subject in an experimental behavior modification program run at Vacaville State Prison by Colston Westbrook. Westbrook was a CIA psychological warfare expert, and advisor to the Korean CIA From 1966 to 1969 he was a CIA advisor to the Vietnamese Special Police Branch.

TESTICLES BOMBARDED WITH RADIATION 1963

In 1963, America had yet to land on the moon, but US scientists were already pondering a matter of extreme gravity, at least to those involved: How might space radiation affect astronauts' testicles?

They were also curious about the radiated gonads of unsuspecting workers at America's atomic energy plants: Could they have children? Perhaps worse, what if they did?

In an ugly exercise of rudimentary science that is only now coming to a close, a captive group of human guinea pigs -- inmates of Washington and Oregon prisons -- were lured into a literal balls-out effort to answer those questions. Enticed with cash and suggestions that participating could help win them parole, and lulled by official assurances that the tests were safe, dozens of prisoners between 1963 and 1973 lined up, stripped down and offered their genitalia to what science called "reproductive radiation tests."

One of the nastiest secrets was an experiment designed to determine how much plutonium a human could safely handle. In that experiment, conducted in the mid-1940s, 18 people -- 17 American adults and one Australian child -- were injected with plutonium without their knowledge or consent.

THE TUSKEGEE SYPHILIS EXPERIMENT 1932 to 1972

The Tuskegee Syphilis Study (1932-1972) was a medical experiment, conducted around Tuskegee, Alabama, where 400 poor, mostly illiterate black American sharecroppers became part of a study on the treatment of syphilis without their full knowledge.

The study started with 400 infected black men and 200 healthy black men as controls. By 1972, only 74 of the test subjects were still alive. For many participants, treatment was intentionally denied- while patients were lied to, and given a fake placebo treatment - in order to 'observe' the fatal progression of the disease. Between 28 and 100 had died as a direct result of damage caused by syphilis.

Cheater, Poison, Murder, and Shady Suicide

It looks like Bernard Kerik has tried to live down to his mentor Rudolph Ghoul-liani's footsteps as he's been outed as a cheater, crooked cop, and all around shady individual. Don't worry, this will all be forget in a year, and he'll still have a place in elite circles. Maybe even do Oprah after he writes a book. God, I'm turning into a misanthropic prick. Oh well.

First he admits to hiring an illegal immigrant to clean his place, no doubt paying little to nothing, then it leaks to the press he has been having affairs with two women, one of them a famous rich bitch publisher Judith Regan, who often criticized men for cheating on their wives when she had a shitty little show on cable. She knew he was married with two kids, fucked him anyway, and left love notes at one of his apartments. The love notes were discovered by his other chick, and one thing leads to another, Yadda yadda yadda.

Then to add to a career of shady dealings, it's been discovered he has ties to a mob construction outfit. I don't know why he stepped down, none of the Democrats were against his nomination, and he fits right in with today's leaders. We are fucked as a country.

Moving right along. The U.S. and George Soros orchestrated election protest in the Ukraine gets some added drama in the past week with the revelation that Viktor Yushchenko was poisoned. The poison changed his face, as seen in the picture above. If only all world leaders could be slipped this poison, so their true character would show as graphically. What's going on in the Ukraine is scary stuff, showing just how easy it is to control dissent. Powerful people, in the shadows, continue to play the world like a chess game.

One of the game pieces in this powerful chess game is the Grim Reaper. It seems whenever a whistleblower, or investigative journalist gets too close to the truth, he's likely to show up suicided. If I were the paramedics who are casting doubts on the official story of Dr. David Kelly's death, I'd be careful about being around any body of water, sharp objects, or handy pistol.

Most researchers know Dr. Kelly, the microbiologist who questioned the reasons for going to war in Iraq, which didn't sit well with Tony Blair, ended up dead after going for a walk. It was ruled a suicide, and conspiracy theories swamped the web. Conspiracy theory is now conspiracy fact.

The peculiar thing about the death of Dr. Kelly is it coincided with a string of deaths with one thing in common. They were all microbiologists who had connections with ethnic weapon research.

As bizarre as that is, news came of the "suicide" of Gary Webb. For those who don't know, Gary Webb was the brave reporter who investigated the connections between the CIA, Contras, and Crack Cocaine. He also, on a radio broadcast, told of his interest in ethnic weapons. His interest stemmed from trials going on in South Africa. I'm sure the mainstream press will be all over this...not.
